  • Akira Amatsume is one of the heroines in Yosuga no Sora. Daughter of a devout family, the ever-cheerful Akira lives alone on the property of a small, yet sacred, Shinto shrine. Akira’s energetic liveliness is contagious to those around her, with an innocent personality that makes befriending the girl a second-nature.

    Appearance[]

153 cm tall. Akira has short brown hair and dark brown eyes. She has a childlike appearance, like Sora, but with more liveliness and innocence. She is often seen with two hairpins on the front side of her hair. She is one of the smallest heroines, only taller than Sora. She is considered beautiful and very cute.

    Personality[]

Having an innocent personality, Akira is much like an angel. She often plays with kids and helps the people of the village. She is the most lively of the heroines. Under her cheerful outer self lies a mature and depressed Akira that she hides from others in order to prevent them (especially Kazuha) from knowing the real her, so as not to worry them. She only ever shows this side to Haru (in her route).

    Background[]

Because she lives at the local shrine, Akira spends much of her time practicing the habits and traditions of a miko (shrine maiden), including performance of requisite ceremonies and holiday festivals.

It is heavily implied that she and Kazuha share the same father. Kazuha's mother does not like Akira because of this, as she is a reminder of her husband's infidelity, and she convinces her husband to disown Akira. Because of this antipathy, Akira is very submissive in her presence. Although Akira is not officially acknowledged, Kazuha's father keeps a distant eye on her, privately expressing pride in her at the shrine festival. Furthermore, Yahiro Ifukube, who helps look after Akira, admits to Haruka that her store is barely able to support herself let alone Akira, implying that Kazuha's father is also supporting Akira financially through Yahiro.

At the conclusion of Akira's arc, she is told that Kazuha's mother and her mother shared a hospital room when the girls were born, that her mother died shortly thereafter, and that Kazuha's mother saw Akira when she was a baby and took a liking to her. Furthermore, it is revealed that the pendant she thought was her mother's actually belonged to Kazuha's mother who was holding her after her mother died. The infant Akira pulled the pendant from around Kazuha's mother's neck and she was allowed to keep it so that Akira would have at least one memento from her deceased mother.

    Story (Visual Novel)[]

    Akira Route:

One day after Haruka visits Akira at the shrine, Akira takes Haruka to the candy store. Here Haruka meets Yahiro who has owned the store since her grandmother passed away. During this visit Yahiro explains that she is Akira's guardian and that Akira has no longer has parents.

Messing around at the pool Akira ends up sweeping Haruka's legs with a hose, which inadvertently causes Haruka to fall on top of Akira which gets his clothes dirty. Akira then offers to wash Haruka's clothes for him as an apology. Haruka goes to the shrine to drop off his clothes for Akira. while Akira goes to get tea for Haru, Kazuha approaches the shrine calling for "Onee-chan" not realizing that Haruka is there. It is at this point that Akira also comes back and greets Kazuha but Kazuha ends up fleeing out of embarrassment. Kazuha starts acting coldly toward Haruka and trying to keep her distance, even dragging Akira away from the rest of the group during lunch. In order to try resolve any issues Kazuha has with him, Haruka goes to Kazuha's house only to find she isn't present. On the way back Haruka ends up running into Kazuha and apologizes for any trouble he might have caused. This causes Kazuha to apologize for the way she acted and the two of them end up making up. After this Akira shows up on her bike and asks if Kazuha and Haruka are fighting and she apologizes herself thinking it's her fault, this causes Kazuha to blurt out that it's their fathers fault revealing that Akira and Kazuha are actually half sisters.

Haruka meets with Akira and discusses when they went to cicada hunt as kids. Reflecting on this Haruka remembers that Akira lost her mothers pendant when the two of them fall down the slope. Haruka wants to look for it but as the two of them were injured Akira says it is fine and the two of them returned to the shrine.

Akira and Haruka run into Kazuha after they finish making shrine decorations. During this Kazuha's mother pulls up in her car and thanks Haruka for everything his grandparents did. Akira greets Kazuha's mother but she completely ignores Akira in return. Even though Kazuha is upset by this, Akira says that it's fine and that she doesn't mind.

The group goes on a trip to the beach Akira falls asleep on the train home and Haruka carry's her back to the shrine. In Akira's room Haruka figures that she must be lonely by the fact that she's the only one living here. Here Akira tells Haruka that he is someone special to her, and Haruka responds saying that Akira is special to him as well. The moments between the two is interrupted by a text message from Sora, Leaving Haruka to wonder if both their definitions of "special" are the same.

Following Akira and Kazuha's birthday celebration, Haruka realizes that he left his phone behind and returns to the shrine to retrieve it. At the shrine he runs into Akira again and she thanks Haruka for the celebration and including Kazuha. Akira then confesses that the way she feels about Haruka is different to everyone else, Haruka returns her feelings and the two then share an intimate moment.

A few days later Kazuha meets up with Akira and Haruka at the candy store and Kazuha notices that Haruka is addressing Akira by her first name. When Akira offers Kazuha to come eat cake with them, Kazuha refuses and leaves. Haruka wanting to clear things up chases Kazuha. When Haruka catches up to her, Kazuha laments that Akira is being so easily taken away from her. Haruka scolds her saying that the bond Akira and Kazuha share can't be so easily severed and that Kazuha will always be special to Akira. Kazuha apologizes for being jealous and the two return to the candy store where Akira is waiting.

Haruka goes to the shrine and accompanies Akira while she takes some kids behind the shrine to catch bugs. While the kids catch bugs, Akira and Haruka go for a walk. After playing around they fall the slope and accidentally find Akira's pendant that she lost the last time they fell. After they find it Haruka is happy calling it a miracle, but Akira seems pretty upset about it. Later on Haruka goes to find something to use as a chain to repair it, after Sora helps him find something suitable he runs into Akira and goes to the shrine with her. At Akira's place Haruka reads a notebook he found on Akira's desk, only to find out it's a medical journal from Haruka's grandmother. The notebook details the circumstances of Kazuha and Akira's birth. Within the notebooks pages Haruka's grandmother writes that Migiwa-san's baby was the one who broke her mothers necklace and that the name tags of both babies had been torn off. This led Haruka's grandmother to believe that the babies had been swapped. Akira then catches Haruka reading the notebook and explains that the things in the notebook are only speculation and could possibly be wrong. Haruka suggests that Akira show Kazuha's mother the pendant, to which Akira replies that she doesn't want to hurt Kazuha and that nobody will be happy if the truth is revealed.

Reading the notebook, Haruka begins mulling over whether he should seek out the truth. Eventually Haruka talks to Yahiro who tells him that if he digs out the truth that the responsibility will fall solely on him and that he should be prepared to be hated by Akira. Afterwards Akira asks Haruka if he'd like to go to a trip to the neighboring town, Haruka agrees and they decide to make it a day trip for the following day. Throughout the trip Akira asks about where Haruka used to live and how difficult it would be to get there by train. Haruka then asks Akira about her sudden interest in the place Haruka used to live. Akira says that she's wondering what it's like and whether she could live over there with Haruka.

The following day Akira notices the ribbon in Haruka's pocket and asks him about it, he replies that it is a chain for the pendant and attaches the ribbon to the pendant. As Haruka tries to put the pendant on Akira's neck she rejects it saying that things should be left as is. Haruka realizes that if somebody sees the pendant they might ask questions and the truth might be revealed. Akira says that it's probably a mistake and Haruka says that he should be the one who reveals it. Akira begins to cry saying that Kazuha's family will have a terrible time and that Haruka will also get hurt because of something he did for her sake. Akira apologizes and says that it is best if she were to disappear, and that her existence is causing people to be troubled. Akira suggests that they both forget all this and continue to live a happy life.

Back at his house, Haruka mulls over what it is he should do. Sora questions Haruka about why he feels down so he vaguely explains the situation to her. Haruka asks Sora if there's a way to check who Akira's parents are, and Sora tells him that they could do a DNA test. Sora also says that in the end Haruka will end up being the one who gets hurt so he shouldn't act if he's afraid of causing problems. Afterwards Haruka goes to Yahiro again, and says that he wants to reveal the truth about Akira's parents and tells Yahiro what happened when Akira and Kazuha were delivered. Yahiro then takes Haruka into her room and brings up a DNA test on her computer. Yahiro says that she can easily get Akira's hair and saliva by deceiving her but that's all she can do. Haruka says that he'll go to Kazuha for help getting Kazuha's mothers hair and saliva. Yahiro says that Akira will find the DNA test results if it is delivered to her house, so they'll have to send it to Haruka's.

Haruka goes to Kazuha's house and explains the situation to her asking for her help. Kazuha is in disbelief at first, but as Haruka goes over the situation she begins to think it's plausible. Kazuha then agrees to help and collects the DNA from herself and her mother. Afterwards Yahiro gets Akira's saliva by getting her to taste a cotton bud and they get her hair while Kazuha is stroking her head. Kazuha and Haruka go together to mail off the DNA test and Kazuha reassures Haruka that whatever happens, the result is not his fault. On the day of the school opening ceremony Haruka gets a phone call that says the test results will be delivered on that day and inquires as to when someone will be home to collect it. Haruka says somebody will be around in the afternoon. After Haruka hangs up the phone, Sora asks who was calling and Haruka simply says that it was the post office. On the way to school Sora overhears Haruka tell Kazuha that the results are arriving in the afternoon.

After school Kazuha and Haruka find that Akira and Sora both went on ahead without them. On the way back to the house Kazuha and Haruka find the postman on his way back and they ask about the letter and the postman says that a family member has already collected the letter. Kazuha and Haruka hurry back to the house to find that Akira and Sora are not present after which they start panicking and hurry to the shrine to try and find Akira and Sora there. On their way to the shrine Haruka smells something burning, and as he climbs the steps with Kazuha he sees white smoke coming from the shrine. As Haruka and Kazuha arrive at the shrine they see Sora and Akira standing by a fire. Haruka approaches to see that they are burning his Grandmothers notebook. As Haruka and Kazuha inquire about what's going on, Akira simply remains normal as if nothing is happening. Even as Haruka yells at her, Akira keeps on smiling, hiding her true emotions. Haruka calmly asks Akira for the letter, and Akira pulls it out and holds it over the fire. Haruka is fearful that if Akira drops it, it will be lost forever and tells Akira that it is the DNA test of Akira and Kazuha's mother. Akira simply states that Migiwa-san is Kazuha's mother as if it were obvious. Akira then drops the envelope into the fire and Haruka fails to catch it in time, without hesitation Haruka reaches into the fire to grab the letter burning his hand in the process. Haruka and Kazuha reassure Akira that no matter the result of the DNA test that they will be there for her. Kazuha and Sora leave the shrine and Akira takes Haruka to treat his burns.

Treating Haruka's burns, Akira and Haruka read the letter together revealing that Kazuha is Migiwa's child and that their worrying was simply for nothing. Akira tells Haruka that she is finally free and the two share an intimate moment together. Following the DNA test results Akira starts wearing her pendant again saying that she'd feel bad if she didn't wear it because Haruka repaired it for her. Haruka goes shopping with Akira and Kazuha after school and as they are returning with their bags Kazuha's mother pulls up beside the three of them. Akira approaches the car and asks Kazuha's mother if she has seen her pendant before. Kazuha's mother says that the pendant should be something that Kazuha has. Akira replies saying that Kazuha probably dropped it and returns it to Kazuha's mother. As Akira tries to walk away, Kazuha's mother gives the pendant back to Akira and apologizes for how she has treated Akira. After everything that unfolded, Haruka takes Akira to the city that he used to live in and she tells Haruka that she wants him to take her to all sorts of places. Haruka tells himself that he will never let her smile sadly anymore.

    Story (Anime)[1][]

    Common Route (Episode 1)[]

Akira first appears at a grocery store, buying food for the elderly. It is here she bumps into Haru, who she had not seen in years. She does not approach him, and instead opts to wait to speak to him again. They are later properly reunited at school. Though Haru does not remember her, she is still cheerful toward him, and tries to be his friend.

    Kazuha Route (Episodes 2-4)[]

While cleaning the swimming pool as part of a mixed gym, Akira accidentally soaks Kazuha who forgot her swimsuit, and so Akira takes her to dry off. Haruka finds Kazuha's phone and goes to return it, only to overhear a sensual-sounding conversation in which Kazuha addresses Akira as "Onee-chan" (big sister).

When Kazuha realizes that Haruka has overheard their conversation, she chases him down to clear up any misunderstanding. She reveals that Akira is, in fact, her illegitimate older sister, born of a different mother. Due to her family's societal standing, Kazuha's father is not able to acknowledge Akira as his daughter, causing Kazuha to be resentful of her father and to feel a burden of guilt and responsibility towards the always-hard-working Akira. To help lift Kazuha's spirits, Haruka invites her out on a date, and they subsequently realize and admit their rapidly progressing feelings towards each other. Meanwhile, Akira continues to try her best on her own, but collapses, apparently due to exhaustion.

On their way home from school, Haruka and Kazuha are interrupted by a frantic Yahiro, who is concerned over the non-appearance of the always-responsible Akira as usual. They discover Akira at her home, collapsed due to exhaustion, and Kazuha proceeds to blame herself and her infatuation with Haruka for not noticing Akira's condition. Akira recovers a few days later, but confronts Kazuha about her abandonment of Haruka and the inappropriate sense of guilt she feels regarding their father's actions. Realizing the truth of Akira's words, Kazuha withdraws into a state of depression while struggling to determine what to do. The day of the festival arrives, and Kazuha works up the courage to appear, where she is reunited with Haruka. Haruka informs Kazuha that her father had been supporting Akira financially in secret all this time and, when Kazuha witnesses her father praising Akira, she realizes that she had misjudged him. Thus, she was able to move past her codependency towards Akira and pursue a whole-hearted romantic relationship with Haruka.

    Akira's Route (Episodes 2, 5-6)[]

The introduction to this episode replays the event where Haruka was standing near the girls locker room, overhearing Akira's and Kazuha's conversation, but this time, instead of walking away misled, Akira comes out and takes the phone from Haruka. This allows for the story to have an alternative ending. Haruka notices that Akira has been acting strange lately, and decides to talk to her alone at school the next morning. He sees the sad look on Akira's face and becomes worried, and wants to help Akira find her mother's pendant (after remembering her losing it as a child). They go in search for the pendant by a tree they would play by as kids, only to Haruka's horror that the tree had been removed by a landslide. He attempts at digging around for it, but without any luck. The two go to Akira's residence to take a bath, and have a romantic moment together. From there, Haruka goes to the festival, and, after seeing Akira cry while dancing the sacred dance, rushes off to see what had happened.

Haruka enters Akira's room and stops her from burning something, which is the doctor's missing journal, where it is written that Kazuha and Akira has a chance of mistaken identity. With the journal, he suggests to Yahiro and Kazuha a DNA test to prove things once and for all. Yahiro refuses, but, despite disapproval from her mother, Kazuha agrees. Haruka informs Akira at the shrine the next day that the DNA results will be out in five days, but Akira disappears on the fifth day. Haruka finds her at the train station, where they talk until the evening. When the DNA results arrive that night, Kazuha and Sora delivers it to Akira, who is still at the station, but she buckled, too scared to read it. It is then that Kazuha's mother appears, and tells everything at their home, where Akira is shown the lost pendant, returned to her by someone who found it at the mountains, basing on the name engraved on its back. She reveals that she and Akira's mother had shared the same hospital room, and, one day Akira pulled the pendant off of her neck as Mrs. Migiwa held her in her arms. After hearing that Akira's mother had died, she gave the pendant to her to make her feel, at least, the presence of a mother. Akira then reads the DNA results, and it read negative, which means Akira is born of a different mother. There, Kazuha's mother let her keep the pendant, and apologizes to Akira. She later confesses her love for Haruka and vice versa.

    Nao's Route (Episodes 7-9)[]

Akira plays a small part in this route, beyond helping set up the pool date between Haru and Nao, and giving Haru a 'Cat Paw Fortune Telling' that encourages his romantic pursuits.

    Sora's Route (Episodes 7, 10-12)[]

Akira's part in this route is even smaller than her role in Nao route, with her having nearly no notable moments with the exception of the 'Cat Paw Fortune Telling' scene also canonically occurring in this route.

    Relationships[]

The 'close' relationship between characters Akira Amatsume and Kazuha Migiwa. Though at first Haruka mistakes them for being lovers, due to overhearing a sensual conversation between them coming from the girl's locker room, it is revealed by Kazuha to Haruka she and Akira are half-sisters. The two share the same father. While Kazuha is aware of her relation to Akira, Akira, however, is unaware of her and Kazuha being half-sisters and believing her protectiveness and concern for her is really done out of a romantic nature, Akira kisses her and Kazuha steps back shocked by this sudden move by Akira and runs away emotional and sobbing.

    • In the manga novelization of the series, Akira holds a romantic interest in Kazuha due to her protectiveness before it's revealed that although they shared the same room in the hospital they were both born in. They weren't actually blood related according to DNA test results. In the anime, however, this was adapted to both girls having a strong connection with one another (Akira's mistakenly being romantic) before it's revealed by Kazuha that they are actually half-sisters.
    • This is the second character relationship in the series in which the characters share an incestuous kiss, due to them being really half-sisters (Akira didn't know; Kazuha knew and was appropriately shocked by this action), the second being between fraternal twins Haruka and Sora.
